Hanns Oberlindober was born on March 5, 1896, in Munich, the son of a Bavarian officer. He attended the humanistic gymnasium in Berlin-Friedenau and then volunteered for military service. After the war, he worked in commerce until 1927.
 
Oberlindober joined the Nazi Party (NSDAP) as early as 1922. From 1927 onward, he was a leading speaker for the party. In 1930, he was elected to the Reichstag and appointed to the party's national leadership and the Supreme SA Leadership as an advisor on war victims' issues (1933). In 1934, he was tasked with consolidating all war victims' organizations and appointed head of the Main Office for War Victims' Welfare. In this capacity, he endeavored to establish closer ties with the equivalent French organization within the framework of the International Front Fighters' Associations.
